Proteins are a diverse and abundant class of biomolecules, constituting more than 50% of the dry weight of cells. This diversity and abundance reflect the central role of proteins in virtually all aspects of cell structure and function. Biologically occurring polypeptides range in size from small to very large.

A particularly well-illustrated, broadly applicable graduate level textbook on protein structure and function. Sure, it doesn't get into the nitty-gritty of particular subsets of the field, but it's a really good start.
A beautiful and accessible guidebook for budding proteinomists, or for anyone interested in cell physiology.
